Battery and charging
What is USB-C and what is it for?
USB-C is a type of connector: small, oval and reversible, it plugs in either way up. It can carry power, data and video, but not every USB-C port or cable does all three: the name describes the shape of the connector, not what it is capable of.
The shape does not tell you the speed
Two USB-C cables that look identical can be very different inside. One may only charge slowly, while another supports fast charging, high-speed data transfer and video output. The same goes for the ports on a device.
So when something does not work as expected (slow charging, a monitor showing no picture), the first things worth checking are the cable and what each device's port supports.
What it is used for
To charge phones, earbuds, power banks and laptops with the same kind of cable. To transfer files. And, on devices that allow it, to connect a monitor or a projector directly, with no HDMI adapter.
Fast charging over USB-C uses the Power Delivery standard, where the charger and the device agree on how much power to use.
What to check before you buy
- Check what the device's USB-C port does: charging only, data, or video as well.
- For fast charging, the charger and the cable must support the power your device accepts.
- If you want it to connect a display, confirm the port has video output.
