Displays
What is the difference between an AMOLED and an IPS display?
On an AMOLED display each pixel emits its own light and can switch off completely, so black is true black and contrast is very high. An IPS (LCD) display uses a backlight that is always on. AMOLED usually looks more vivid; IPS usually costs less.
How it shows on a smartwatch
With AMOLED, watch faces with a black background blend into the bezel and the screen looks bigger. And since black pixels are off, it is the technology that allows an always-on display with little power use.
On IPS, black looks dark gray in dim surroundings, because the backlight stays on. In direct sun, what counts is each screen's peak brightness, whatever its technology.
Refresh rate
Apart from the panel type, the refresh rate (in Hz) tells you how many times per second the image updates. More Hz means smoother motion and animations.
What to check before you buy
- If you want an always-on display, look for AMOLED.
- Also compare brightness and resolution, not just the panel type.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on what is on screen. With dark backgrounds it uses less, because black pixels are off; with white backgrounds and high brightness it can use more.
