Water and dust resistance

What does IP44 mean?

IP44 means the device is protected against solid objects over 1 millimeter, such as wires or small tools (4), and against water splashes from any direction (4). It is common on lamps, fans and appliances for bathrooms, kitchens and covered patios. It is not designed for direct rain.

Where it fits

IP44 is the typical rating for a bathroom light outside the shower zone, a porch light under a roof or a kitchen appliance that gets the occasional splash.

The first 4 is not protection against fine dust: it keeps small objects out. For very dusty places, a 5 or a 6 as the first digit is better.

IP44 versus IP54 and IP65

IP54 has the same splash protection but is also dust protected. IP65 is dust tight and resists jets, the recommended level for uncovered outdoor spots.

That is why, for something that will be exposed to rain, IP44 falls short.

What to check before you buy

  • For humid indoor spaces (bathroom, kitchen) or covered outdoor areas, IP44 is enough.
  • For uncovered outdoor spots, look for IP65 or higher.
  • In the bathroom, respect the distance from the shower the maker specifies.
