Water and dust resistance
What does IP66 mean?
IP66 means the device is completely dust tight (6) and resists powerful water jets from any direction (6). It handles torrential rain, wind-driven water and a moderate hose-down. It is a common rating on security cameras, floodlights and devices that live outdoors.
One step above IP65
IP65 certifies regular water jets; IP66, much stronger jets, like a thick hose. In an area with heavy rain or water hitting from the side, that difference gives peace of mind.
The first 6 guarantees dust stays out, which is useful in yards, parking lots and dirt roads.
What IP66 does not cover
It is not submersible: if the spot can flood or the device may end up under water, you need IP67 or IP68.
The rating applies to the device, not its installation. The power adapter, cable joints and connectors usually need shelter under a roof or inside an outdoor junction box.
What to check before you buy
- For outdoor cameras and lights, IP66 is an excellent guarantee.
- Protect cable joints and the power adapter: they are usually the weak point.
- If the spot can flood, look for IP67 or higher.
