Water and dust resistance
What does IPX4 mean?
IPX4 means the device resists water splashes from any direction. The X indicates that dust protection was not certified, not that there is none. It is fine for sweat and rain; it is not meant to be submerged or held under running water.
What the X means
In the IP code the first digit covers dust and the second covers water. When a manufacturer certifies only one of them, an X takes the place of the other. So IPX4 says one thing only: level 4 water resistance.
What it is good for
It is the usual level in wireless earbuds and portable speakers. It covers gym sweat, a drizzle or an accidental splash.
It does not cover immersion, direct jets or steam. An IPX4 speaker can sit near the pool, not in it.
IPX4 compared with IPX5 and IPX7
IPX5 is one step up: it resists water jets, so the device can be rinsed under the tap. IPX7 certifies immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. If you are choosing between two pairs of earbuds and plan to use them in heavy rain or wash them, the higher second digit is what makes the difference.
On earbuds with a charging case, the rating usually applies to the earbuds only: the case is normally not water protected, so dry the earbuds before putting them back.
What to check before you buy
- For workouts or walking in a drizzle, IPX4 is enough.
- For the beach or the pool, look for IPX7 or IP67.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Sweat counts as a splash. Dry the device after training, because the salt left by sweat can affect the charging contacts over time.
