What does RPM mean?
RPM means revolutions per minute: the number of full turns a motor, a drill bit or a blade makes in one minute. It measures rotation speed, not force. On an electric nail drill it tells you how fast the bit spins; on a fan, how fast the blades turn.
Speed is not the same as force
RPM tells you how fast something spins; the force behind that spin is called torque. A motor can advertise very high RPM and still slow down under pressure if its torque is low. That is why the top figure alone does not describe how powerful a device is.
The range matters more than the maximum: a device with adjustable speed lets you use few revolutions for delicate work and more where material has to be removed.
How to read RPM by device
On electric nail drills, low speeds are used on the natural nail and cuticle, and high speeds to file down acrylic or gel. The sensible approach is always to start at the lowest speed and increase gradually.
On fans, more RPM moves more air and also makes more noise; the size and shape of the blades matter as much as speed. On massage guns, the equivalent figure is usually given in percussions per minute, which is a different measurement.
What to check before you buy
- Look for adjustable speed and check the minimum, not only the maximum.
- On a nail drill, forward and reverse rotation suits both right and left handed use.
- On a fan, compare RPM together with the noise level in dB.

Frequently asked questions
No. More RPM is more speed, useful for some jobs and excessive for others. What gives versatility is being able to adjust it.
