Battery and charging

What is Power Delivery (PD) fast charging?

Power Delivery (PD) is the fast-charging standard over USB-C. It lets the charger and the device negotiate how much power to use, instead of always delivering the same amount. For it to work, the charger, the cable and the device must all be compatible: if one is not, it charges at normal speed.

What the watts mean

Charging power is measured in watts (W) and is the result of multiplying volts by amps. A charger with more watts can charge faster, but only up to the maximum the device accepts.

Using a charger more powerful than the device needs does not harm it: the device takes what it can and nothing more.

The cable counts too

Not every USB-C cable supports the same power. A basic cable can limit charging even when the charger and the device are fast. If something charges slower than expected, the cable is the first thing worth checking.

What to check before you buy

  • Check that the device states PD compatibility.
  • Look at the charger's watts and at what your device accepts.
  • Use a USB-C cable that supports that power.

Frequently asked questions

Compatible devices regulate charging on their own and lower the power as the battery nears full. Heat is what wears a battery most, so avoid charging in the sun or under a pillow.
