What does Hz mean?

Hertz (Hz) measures how many times per second something repeats. On a display or a projector it is the refresh rate: how many images it shows each second. In audio it describes the pitch of a sound, from bass to treble. The same unit describes different things depending on where it appears.

On displays and projectors: refresh rate

A 60 Hz display redraws the picture 60 times per second; a 120 Hz one, 120 times. The more hertz, the smoother and sharper motion looks, which is most noticeable in fast games and when scrolling.

To benefit, the whole chain has to keep up: the console or computer must generate that many images per second, and the cable and port must carry them. Films and most series are shot at 24 frames per second, so a high refresh rate adds little there.

In audio and in electricity

On headphones and speakers, the frequency range (for example, 20 Hz to 20 kHz) shows the tones the device can reproduce, from the lowest to the highest. That span matches what the human ear can perceive, so a wider range does not by itself mean better sound.

In mains electricity, Hz is how many times per second the current alternates. In Venezuela the grid runs at 60 Hz, a figure printed on the label of any device you plug in.

What to check before you buy

  • For competitive gaming look for 120 Hz or more and confirm your console or PC can reach it.
  • Check at what resolution that rate is offered: some devices only deliver 120 Hz at 1080p.
  • For films and series, 60 Hz is enough.

Frequently asked questions

No. Hz is how many images the display can show per second; FPS is how many the console or computer generates. What you see is the lower of the two.
