How does night vision work on a security camera?
Infrared night vision lights the scene with LEDs the human eye cannot see, and the camera records in black and white. Color night vision uses a visible spotlight or a more sensitive sensor to keep colors. The first is discreet; the second gives more detail.
Infrared: discreet
The infrared LEDs switch on by themselves when light is low. The picture is black and white because the sensor is capturing light that has no color to our eyes. Range depends on the number and power of the LEDs, and it drops if there is glass or a pale wall very close, which bounce the light back.
Color: more information
With a white spotlight the camera records in color at night, which helps tell apart clothing or the color of a vehicle. The spotlight also works as a deterrent, since it turns on when motion is detected. In return, it gives away where the camera is.
What to check before you buy
- To watch without drawing attention, infrared.
- To identify details and deter, color with a spotlight.
- Do not mount the camera behind glass: the infrared reflects and blinds the image.
- Outdoors, check the IP rating.
