Connectivity
What is Matter in the smart home?
Matter is an open smart home standard created by Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and other companies. A Matter-compatible device (a plug, a lock, a light) works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and SmartThings at the same time, without depending on its maker's app, and can keep working inside the home even if the internet goes down.
The problem it solves
Before, each brand had its own app and cloud, and not every device worked with every assistant. Matter defines a common language: you set it up once and control it from the ecosystem you prefer, or from several at once.
Because control can happen inside the home network, commands are faster and do not always depend on an outside server.
How it connects
Matter runs over WiFi, Ethernet or Thread, a low-power network for sensors and small devices. Setup uses Bluetooth and a QR code that comes with the device.
Matter devices that use Thread need a Thread "border router" at home, a role that some smart speakers and hubs already include. Matter devices over WiFi only need your router.
What to check before you buy
- Look for the Matter logo on the box or the spec sheet if you want to use the device with several assistants.
- If it says "Matter over Thread", make sure you have a Thread border router at home.
- Keep the setup QR code: you will need it if you reset the device.
