Water and dust resistance
What does 5 ATM mean on a watch?
5 ATM means the watch withstands a pressure equal to a 50-meter column of water, measured at rest. In practice it is suitable for rain, a cold shower and surface swimming. It is not suitable for diving or for high-impact water sports.
Why 50 meters is not 50 meters
The figure is a static lab pressure. When you swim or jump in, the movement of your arm creates pressure peaks higher than the real depth would. That is why a 5 ATM watch is fine for surface swimming, not for going down 50 meters.
The usual scale
3 ATM: splashes and rain. 5 ATM: surface swimming. 10 ATM: swimming and snorkeling. For diving there are watches with a specific certification.
Hot water and steam expand the seals, and soap degrades them: avoid the sauna and hot showers even if the watch is rated 5 ATM.
What to check before you buy
- If you want to track swimming, look for 5 ATM at least.
- Do not press the buttons under water unless the manufacturer allows it.

Frequently asked questions
They measure different things. IP68 certifies static immersion and dust protection; 5 ATM certifies resistance to pressure, which is what matters when swimming. Many watches carry both.
