Water and dust resistance
What does IP65 mean?
IP65 means the device is completely dust tight (6) and resists water jets from any direction (5). It is the typical level for outdoor cameras and lights: it handles heavy rain and a garden hose, but it is not designed to be submerged.
Why it is the outdoor standard
A camera, a floodlight or a speaker that lives outside gets dust all year round and wind-driven rain. The 6 guarantees dust stays out, and the 5 that heavy rain or a hose-down will not damage it.
How it differs from IP67
IP67 is not simply more than IP65: it measures something else. The 7 certifies immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes; the 5 certifies jets. A device may be tested for one and not the other, and some list both.
When you install it outside
The rating refers to the body of the device. The plug, the power adapter and the cable joints are usually outside that protection: the common practice is to keep them under cover or inside an outdoor junction box.
Direct sun and heat also age the gaskets over the years. An eave or a small hood helps the protection last longer.
What to check before you buy
- For an uncovered outdoor installation, IP65 is the recommended minimum.
- If the spot can flood or the device may fall into water, look for IP67 or IP68.
