Water and dust resistance
What does IP54 mean?
IP54 means the device is protected against dust (5) and against water splashes from any direction (4). It handles rain, sweat and everyday dust. It is not submersible: it does not resist immersion or pressurized water jets.
What an IP54 device can take
The 5 means some dust may get in, but not enough to affect how the device works. The 4 means water splashes, wherever they come from, will not damage it.
In practice: rain, sweat during a workout, a splash while washing your hands or dust from the street are not a problem.
What it cannot take
It is not built to be submerged or to take a direct jet (a shower, a hose, a running tap). That requires IP65 or higher or, for immersion, IP67 or IP68.
It does not cover salt water or steam either. If sea water gets on it, wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it.
Where it is used
It is very common in sports earbuds, entry-level smartwatches, smart locks and cameras for covered outdoor areas. On a lock or a camera it means light rain is fine, not a direct jet.
What to check before you buy
- Enough for sports, rain and daily use.
- To swim or shower with it, look for IP67, IP68 or 5 ATM.
- For uncovered outdoor spots, IP65 or higher is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions
Against water they are equal: both resist splashes. The difference is dust: IP54 certifies dust protection, while in IPX4 that part is not certified.
