Water and dust resistance
What does IP68 mean?
IP68 means the device is dust tight (6) and resists continuous immersion beyond 1 meter deep (8). The exact depth and time are defined by each manufacturer, so two IP68 devices can withstand different things.
Why there is no single figure
The standard only requires level 8 to be more demanding than level 7 (1 meter, 30 minutes). The manufacturer must state its own conditions, for example 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. That detail is usually in the spec sheet or the manual.
What stays the same
Like every other IP rating, it is tested with fresh water and no movement. It does not cover salt water, soap, steam or diving, and resistance drops as the seals wear.
IP68 day to day
An IP68 device can go out in the rain, survive a fall into water and be washed with fresh water. Even so, many manufacturers state in their warranty that liquid damage is not covered: the certification describes what the device withstands in a test, not a promise for every situation.
Avoid pressing buttons while it is under water unless the manual allows it, and dry it before plugging it in.
What to check before you buy
- The safest pick if the device gets wet often.
- Check the depth and time the manufacturer declares.

No device is waterproof without conditions. IP68 resists immersion within the limits the manufacturer states, in fresh water.
