Water and dust resistance

What does IPX7 mean?

IPX7 means the device withstands being submerged in fresh water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. The X means its dust protection was not certified, which does not mean it has none. It is a common rating on portable speakers, sports earbuds and flashlights.

What an IPX7 device can take

Falling into the pool, heavy rain or rinsing it under the tap is not a problem. The test is done with the device still, one meter deep, for half an hour.

It is not designed for regular swimming, diving or use in salt, soapy or hot water: those conditions fall outside the test.

IPX7 versus IP67 and IP68

IPX7 and IP67 handle the same water exposure; the difference is that IP67 also certifies that dust stays out (the 6). IP68 goes beyond one meter, under conditions each manufacturer defines.

If the device gets wet with sea water or chlorinated pool water, rinse it with fresh water and let it dry before charging.

What to check before you buy

  • For the beach, the pool or the river, IPX7 is a good minimum for a speaker.
  • Check that port covers close properly: the protection depends on them.
  • Never charge it wet; wait until the port is dry.

They may survive a dip, but regular swimming exposes them to movement, pressure and chlorine, which fall outside the test. There are models designed specifically for swimming.
