Water and dust resistance
What does IPX5 mean?
IPX5 means the device resists water jets from any direction: in the test, water is sprayed at it through a nozzle for several minutes without getting inside. It handles heavy rain, sweat and a rinse under the tap, but it is not submersible. The X means its dust protection was not certified.
What it handles day to day
It is a very common rating on sports earbuds, speakers and basic watches. Gym sweat, running in the rain or a splash in the kitchen will not damage it.
What it cannot take is going under water: falling into the pool or being submerged to wash it may let water in.
IPX5 versus IPX4 and IPX7
IPX4 resists splashes; IPX5 goes one step further and handles jets, like wind-driven rain or a rinse. IPX7 is already submersible to one meter.
For normal use, the difference between IPX4 and IPX5 is barely noticeable. If you will use the device near water where it could fall in, IPX7 is the safer choice.
What to check before you buy
- For workouts and rain, IPX5 is more than enough.
- If you will take it to the beach or the pool, look for IPX7.
- Dry the device before putting it back in its case or charging it.

Frequently asked questions
A brief rinse under the tap, without strong pressure, is within what they handle. Do not submerge them or use soap or alcohol, and dry them before charging.
