What is Dolby Audio?

Dolby Audio is a label showing that a device can decode sound in Dolby formats, such as Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus, which streaming platforms and discs use. It guarantees compatibility with that sound, but it does not tell you how many speakers the device has or how loud it gets.

The Dolby names, in order

Dolby Digital is the classic surround format, with up to 5.1 channels: five directions plus one for bass. Dolby Digital Plus is its more efficient successor, and it is the one most streaming uses.

Dolby Atmos adds height: besides sounding around you, effects can be placed above you. Hearing it that way takes speakers or a soundbar built for Atmos. Dolby Vision, by contrast, is not audio at all: it is an HDR picture format.

What it means on a projector or TV

A device with Dolby Audio understands those soundtracks and plays them through its own speakers. If it has two speakers, the result is stereo: the label does not create surround sound where there are no speakers for it.

If you connect a soundbar or a receiver, something else matters: whether the device can hand them the original track without converting it. That function is usually called passthrough or bitstream output, and not every device with Dolby Audio has it.

What to check before you buy

  • To hear surround sound you need the speakers for it; the label alone does not provide it.
  • If you will use a soundbar, look for an HDMI ARC or eARC output and confirm passthrough.
  • Do not confuse Dolby Vision (picture) with Dolby Audio or Atmos (sound).

Frequently asked questions

No. Dolby Audio covers the traditional surround formats. Dolby Atmos is a different format that adds height and needs compatible equipment.
